"Level 3 of Collaboration": Impact packing

Writer: Hoang Long PhamHoang Long Pham

Impact packing was an activity which required us to pack a backpack with essential supplies suitable for children in different scenarios. This experience enabled us to approach the victims of human traffickers closer by actually considering their needs and contemplating our choices for the emergency pack. These backpacks provided us with an insight on the harsh lives they are managing and the privilege we have. Personally, I underestimated the environment they were living in before this activity, but now I fully acknowledge their circumstances, which granted me a growth to be aware of the environment I am living in and be grateful for it.

Through this experience, I now understand that the 'basic essentials' which I initially perceive as inherently available or unlimited, is viewed as a scarce by these families. For these children, basic 'physiological needs' such as clothing, shelter, water, food and education isn't something naturally provided by parents but must be independently searched for. This made me reflect upon one thing---opportunities. Due to their restraining situations, they can’t pursue and access opportunities for success in life: instead of roaming on the streets, me and my peers have the time and environment optimized for studying, something they can’t do because of external factors, not because they choose not to.
